Delighting in the Law?

Let me pose a question to you.  What is your life grounded in?  Where would you say that you draw strength, comfort, conviction, or hope from?  Is it from God?  Do you spend time grounding yourself in God through prayer and the study of His Word?  Or do you find that your day-to-day living centers upon other things – things that, though they are not bad in and of themselves, fight for your devotion and time – things like your family, your job, your pursuit of money and possessions or your search for whatever it may be that makes you feel like everything is okay the most.
To say it another way, where is it exactly that the roots of your soul find themselves planted?  One thing is certain, wherever it may be, it is from there that that the tree of your life finds both its sustenance as well as its stability.  A life planted in the fleeting soils of this world will never grow to be anything other than malnourished and brittle, only to be snapped in two by the slightest storms of adversity.  A life planted in the ever-rich soils of God’s Word, on the other hand, will find itself being cared for with sovereign precision by the Great Husbandman, only to bear everlasting fruit and growing strong and mighty, able to withstand even the greatest winds of this life.
So where are you finding your roots these days?  Are you planted in the temporal pleasures and deceptions of this world?  Or are you planted in the eternal truth of God and His Word?  Let us gravely consider that where you plant yourself in this world will have huge ramifications upon where you’ll find yourself in the next.
The psalmist writes rather poignantly in Psalm 1:3 concerning the individual whose “…delight is in the law of the LORD…”  He says, “He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.  In all that he does, he prospers.” (ESV)  Let us strive to be like this man, delighting ourselves in the law of the LORD.
